THE MUSICAL JOURNEY OF “MASTER GLEN PEARSON”

“Master Glen Pearson”, born in 1957 in Oakland, California, is a renowned jazz pianist and music educator whose illustrious career spans over five decades. Starting his musical journey at the age of six, Pearson quickly established himself as a talented pianist, drawing inspiration from jazz legends like Ahmad Jamal. Moreover, it was  Jazz vocalist Faye Carol who branded Glen with the “Master” title  when she  would  introduce  him  on  the  set.  “Ladies  and  gentlemen  on  keyboards, “Master Glen Pearson.” Ms. Carol would announce at their  performances in San  Francisco. His passion for jazz took him from elementary school bands to mentorships with iconic musicians, ultimately leading him to a thriving career in the competitive jazz scene of New York City.

                      EARLY INFLUENCES AND DEVELOPMENTS

Pearson's musical growth began with piano lessons, but he soon explored other instruments, joining his elementary school band as a trumpet player. However, his heart belonged to the piano, and he began performing with experienced musicians in his Oakland community. His dedication led to a mentorship with Ahmad Jamal, a pivotal moment that shaped his musical direction.

 

                  PROFESSIONAL JOURNEY AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Throughout his career, Pearson's talent and versatility earned him opportunities to perform with celebrated artists like Dr. Eddie Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, and Pharaoh Sanders. He pursued formal education, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Music from San Francisco State University and later earning a Master's degree in Music from New York University.

Pearson's reputation as a world-class pianist grew, with notable performances at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Blue Note. His versatility allowed him to collaborate with artists across genres, including Grammy Award winners Regina Belle and Diane Reeves, as well as jazz greats like Gerald Albright and George Benson.

                    TEACHING AND DIRECTORSHIP

Beyond performing, Pearson has made significant contributions to music education. In 2012, he became a tenured professor at Alameda College, where he inspires the next generation of musicians. He also served as the music director and keyboardist for the Harlem Boys Choir, leading performances worldwide.

 

                   CURRENT WORK AND RECOGNITIONS

Pearson's career reached new heights with his role in the Count Basie Orchestra, where he occupied the "hot seat" once held by Count Basie himself. His contributions to the orchestra led to a Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album with "Basie Swings the Blues." Despite his international success, Pearson remains grounded, avoiding drug and alcohol abuse, and embracing the natural high of performing music.
