Dawan Muhammad is a grassroots community activist who has also maintained a career as a jazz artist for over fifty years. From 1969 through the late 1970s Muhammad resided in Santa Cruz as a student, artist in residence, and staff member at UCSC. He has been a supporter of Kuumbwa Jazz since its inception and has returned periodically over the years for special occasions and presentations. The Ole Dawgs New Tricks ensemble is a collaboration of like-minded composers and musicians dedicated to preserving traditions and expanding upon traditional ideas related to jazz. Although they perform many styles individually, those familiar with their original work, consider the group’s style to be exploratory extensions of the mid-sixties post-bop era of jazz. However, for those seeking to experience music without preconceived commercial labels, classifications, categories, etc., this group is simply comprised of composers and independent producers known for presenting creative and innovative music, which is spiritually inspired.

Live at Meyhouse with Vocalist Jamie Davis

 —  —

Meyhouse, 40 Emerson St., Palo Alto

After studying under the renowned New York vocal coach Edward Boatner, he moved to San Francisco securing opportunities to perform with Milt Jackson, Eddie Henderson, Melba More and Pharoah Saunders. The year 2000 brought exhilarating performances with the Count Basie Orchestra. On that experience Davis reflects, “Having all that sound behind you is just amazing. You’ve got to ride that current.”

With a repertoire from Cole Porter to Stevie Wonder to the classical music of Bach, Schumann, Mahler and Rameau’s French compositions, confirms Davis possesses the flexibility and sexy sophistication by his effortless delivery to stand with any of the great vocalists. He has been described as a fine wine which has stood the test of time, constantly innovating jazz classics, ‘rolling out’ the blues and performing with one foot in the past and the other in ‘today.’
