Dawan Muhammad is a grassroots community activist who has also maintained a career as a jazz artist for over fifty years. From 1969 through the late 1970s Muhammad resided in Santa Cruz as a student, artist in residence, and staff member at UCSC. He has been a supporter of Kuumbwa Jazz since its inception and has returned periodically over the years for special occasions and presentations. The Ole Dawgs New Tricks ensemble is a collaboration of like-minded composers and musicians dedicated to preserving traditions and expanding upon traditional ideas related to jazz. Although they perform many styles individually, those familiar with their original work, consider the group’s style to be exploratory extensions of the mid-sixties post-bop era of jazz. However, for those seeking to experience music without preconceived commercial labels, classifications, categories, etc., this group is simply comprised of composers and independent producers known for presenting creative and innovative music, which is spiritually inspired.
